ZAZA TIMBER behind the Circle K’s new flagship EV charging station in Sweden

18.02.2025.

ZAZA TIMBER has completed a “design and build” project – the Circle K’s new flagship EV charging station in Järna, Sweden.
The ultra-fast EV charging station in Järna features glued laminated timber (limträ) canopies while semi-transparent solar panels serve as roof cladding and produce renewable energy on site.

Timber structural design, manufacturing and assembly teams of ZAZA TIMBER were behind this “design and build” project resulting in five canopies and several free-standing signature walls. The role of ZAZA TIMBER was limited to timber structures, thus certain works such as laying foundations, wiring, installation of charging points and solar panels and signage were performed by other contractors.

Designed according to the Circle K’s project by Belatchew Arkitekter, each canopy is 5 meters high, 8 meters long and 6 meters wide, while the roofing consists of steel cladding and solar panels. 2.5-meter-high signature walls with benches are also made of wood. In total, there are 989 timber parts that have captured about 26 000 kg of CO2.

At the structural design stage, special attention was paid to the stability of the roof construction consoles under the heavy snow loads, the development of appropriate rigid connections, the drainage of rainwater and the constructive protection of timber structures against adverse environmental conditions.

During production, focus was put on the accuracy of manufacturing small, interconnected parts, surface treatment with hydrophobic paint, and pre-assembly, so that assembly on the construction site was simple and fast (it took just 3 weeks).

Facts:

  • Each canopy roof is designed to withstand a total of 42 tons of snow in worst case scenario;
  • One canopy is made from 7.57 m3 timber of which 97% is glued laminated timber. This amount of timber has captured about 5500 kg of CO2 (1kg of timber = 1.65 to 1.80 kg CO2);
  • For one canopy 12,3 L of wood oil is used to protect timber against sun and precipitation;
  • 563 working hours of two engineers were used to design the canopies and signature walls.

ZAZA TIMBER has notable expertise in structural design, manufacturing and assembly of canopies for EV charging stations. It has assisted the leading Danish electric mobility operator CLEVER by building more than 170 signature canopies created by COBE architects for CLEVER’s EV charging network in 25 locations in Denmark and Norway.
